You’ll never be bored with any MTH songs, all so different
Playlist their catalog and it’s like 10 bands playing
The last part in the end is making fun of the music industry going against the platform “Winny” which was a p2p file sharing software in Japan (basically the Japanese Napster) where people used to upload, download and share music and album illegally.
The conversation at the end was Daisuke screaming at the kids to stop using Winny. The drummer Nao telling him that Winny has been dead for a long time and that the kids don’t even know what that is anymore, also making fun of him because he sounds just like his mom arguing
The drummer Nao is one of Akane Hirose’s role models. She’s the one that inspired her to get into the more heavy drumming. I think there’s a video of Akane doing a MTH cover floating around the internets somewhere. 🤘
Band-Maid might be the queens of surprise, but these guys are the olimpic gods of unexpected 🤘🕊️
WinNY as has been explained was basically Japanese Napster. But remember that MtH are kinda trolling all the time. The song starts out being about being original and not selling out, and standing up for something, and how bands soften their sound and change when they get popular, and don’t talk about real things. So in the song, they go from super hard core noise, to funky punky “catchy” stuff (but lyrically talking about how there’s important things like nuclear fallout aka Fukushima), and then to a total sell out band doing pop music complaining about pirated music. They’re basically shitting on bands that compromise themselves
I like the part where the guitarist goes Super Saiyan! MTH are masters of the “gap”. The contrast between the metal/mosh pit and the pop/little kids is pretty cool. The “gap” is a popular trope in Japan, Miku wanting cute girls playing hard rock, BABYMETAL with the cute girls fronting a metal band, Ladybeard, and a zillion anime, like Gunslinger Girl where young girls are counter-terrorist agents.
Others have mentioned what Winny upload is. When you mentioned the character Winnie, I think you meant Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years. Fun reaction – Maximum The Fun.
You never know what the hell you will be in for when you listen to MTH … every song is completely unlike everything else. It’s not an easy band to listen to, IMHO, but they are one of the most creative and inventive bands out there, because they can and do play anything.
LOL 😂😆 You miss the last part. Yes, more Maximum the “phucking” Hormone 💪
They’re also the inspiration of Hanabie 🌸🤘
By the way Emily Emira of Ladybaby is the new member of PassCode, can’t wait for them to release new MV with her✌️
Great pick Champ! Thanks for analysis as usual. The drummer is hero for Akane from Bandmaid, BTW.
You should listen to their songs , Falling Jimmy or Louisiana Bob, they are full on catchy, ear worm punk-metal songs , totally different to this, totally great 👍
I think you were thinking of The Wonder Years, not Growing Pains. 😀 This is one of the best videos for reactions lmao.
Good luck with jury duty.
yessss lol!!! and you missed the stinger at the end. yoshu fukushu next from them
Maximum the Hormone rule!!!
Band Maid are awesome yes, but MTH are a whole beyond o can’t get enough of. As a once upon thrash/funk/hard rock bassist in many bands this would be my ideal band
Dude, you stopped short. Never stop short.
You can’t even try to understand MTH. They are un-understandable, but in a good way lol. That’s why them and BiSH are two of my favourite bands. Two completely different styles, but they both go against the norm. They recently played a show together in Japan too, which I would have 100% been at if it wasn’t for the Rona!
Speaking of BiSH, I can’t wait for you to react to them. The alternative idol scene will be right up your street. Try ‘Giant Killers’ live from Makuhari Messe and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
Take Sleep, Napalm Death and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, stitch them all together and whatever you feel like it… even some mellow sugar-ish after all the Mayhem (yeah add some of that too) and there you go, never gets boring…
Akane is a known fan of Nao, Rina (from SCANDAL) is another… I wonder if Hinanchu (from Silent Siren) is too? I dunno, but this is awesome, love it.
gotta love me some MTH and yes you did love this band please play more thanks your the best c-ya
From Reddit: Winny was a p2p pirating software like napster that was very popular in Japan but isn’t really used anymore. In an interview, Ryo-kun (who does hate when his music is pirated, I think) was asked why he used such an old reference, he mentioned that he wanted to have a catchy “STOP” phrase where other stuff like “STOP NUKES” could be replaced.
Winny was a lot like early Napster…Nao chastens Dia-chan to forget about Winny, because nobody uses that shit any more, so quit scaring the children. LOL BTW, guitarist Ryo is Nao’s younger brother.
I enjoy all their albums, even the really old ones. But “Yoshu Fukushu” (2013 I think) it’s a masterpiece of MTH style. From absolute mad chaos to funky as hell, all rock genres mixed. I can’t pick another album for a walk to work and mumbling the songs all the way.
Yes! The supreme trolls of music returns.
There is just never a boring moment with MtH 🖤 It’s exactly why their song Yoshu Fukushu is my all time favourite song. I can put it on repeat and not get sick of it. Not a lot of songs you can say that about.
Anyway if you want more mind blowing creativity from Japan, here are a few recommendations…
Sokoninaru: Gou Ni Moyu, Tenohira De Odoru, and Lament Moment.
Paledusk: BLACK ICE, Happy Talk, Lights, 9 Smiles, and NO!
A crowd of rebellion: Dystopia, M1917, Ill, and Satellitear.
Prompts: Empty Sandglass, Blvck Pill, and Tunnel Effect.
Whenever I’m writing a song and it seems like I may be going off the rails I think to myself “But is it ‘Stop stop Winnie upload’ off the rails? No, no it isn’t’.”
Here’s what to expect from MTH, the unexpected. And they are masters at this.
“wtf but also yes” is a really good explanation to what MTH is
Winnie is the Japanese equivalent of Napster. The whole monologue in the end ends with the drummer telling him Winnie hasn’t been a thing for years and years.
Silly fact: lots of Asians have said Chairman Xi looks like Whinnie the Poo. A few years ago, all Whinnie the Poo stuff, including images, were banned in China, because he hates the reference. To this day Whinnie images are used in comics to make fun of Chairman Xi. It’s possible the creator of Whinnie upload was poking fun at this.
Man you’re really onto something at the end tho. I often see people recommend this as the first reaction for people and i think it’s a big disservice to mth, it’s very jarring if you don’t know what you’re getting into and tho you get a big wtf moment with the big change late in the track i think that breeds more confusion and will chase even more people away. It’s tough to convince most people to come back when this song is their first impression. Don’t get me wrong, i love it, but I’m in on it and can see from the outside how difficult this kinda thing is for an outsider.
Them going all over the place with their music is what I love about them.
Little trivia. The lead singer who you said look like Hiroshi Tanahashi is a good friend of NJPW wrestler Hiromu . They get close when Hiromu was hospitalized due to breaking neck in the a match with Dragon Lee while the lead singer of MTH was hospitalized due to neck injuries because of too much head bunging.
Nice trivia: Band-maid are big fans of MTH, and Nao is an inspiration for a lot of the women drummers in Japan. Hanabie started off doing covers of MTH.
WHY DID YOU STOP BEFORE THE FUNNIEST PART?!?!?! (seriously, MTH f-ing SLAPS. Fun fact: Akane’s favorite band) (I may have said something similar on this channel before. Anyways, between Band-Mais and MTH, I do not need to listen to anything else)
