“Maximum The Hormone” is HUGE in Japan! Looks like you’ve already been told about their influence to younger musicians. And you seem to like them 🙂 So, yes, they are VERY out-there… – the GODS of transitions! All their songs have so much stuff going on, it’s crazy.
But also – they maybe are the best trolls in the japanese music industry. “Alien” – basically about a “heavy” band, making good BA music, whining about illegal downloads, and turning to crap pop music for the masses (~ selling out, or think “Metallica” and Napster) “Small your hands” – Nao, the drummer, was having a baby. They basically announced she is a mom now. So they would change their style. Enough with that loud metal stuff. It’s going to be nice and pleasant and cutesy from now on. They released “Small your hands” as a teaser kinda. It was a big fat joke of course. The following “Maximum the Hormone” part was heavy as ever (and even more) – you stumbled upon the “short” version – look for the full one!
All their stuff is awesome! The band name – “Maximum the Hormone” refers to the love of the band for food, they eat a lot, sleep a lot, and generally don’t care about a healthy life style… (well, that changed… song “Maximum the Hormone II”) The band founders are Nao (drums) and Daisuke (vocals). They have been doing MTH since 1998 or 1999. Their org bassist and guitarist after a couple years – so Futoshi on bass and Ryo on guitar joined… Ryo is Naos little brother! Ryo writers most of the stuff, including lyrics, but they are often in “Ryo World” language, not even japanese understand them (and it’s also not really the point ;).
Nao has two kids now. So not only was/is she THE inspiration for so many young girl drummers, but also showed you don’t have to decide between family and your job (well, her job is her passion). Japan is very old-fashioned, many women end their career (not only for musicians; I mean overall) and become a “mom”/”house wife” when they get pregnant. Nao showed you can do both. Tamu Murata (“Nemophila”) did the same, the current “Gacharic Spin” drummer – we’ll see, but it looks like she will be coming back.
Ryo actually is very chill and shy (despite his appearance). As is their bassist. The most audience interaction comes from Nao and Daisuke – these two are constantly arguing about something 😀 Daisuke is a drummer too btw – he knows ALL the drum parts, and they change places with Nao sometimes in live performances or on some songs (-> “VAP”)
Absolutely HUGE live shows! But the band also loves (and maybe even prefers) playing for smaller/medium-sized venues. That makes it more intimate, more raw. But also – you would have to be VERY lucky to get tickets at all XD
PS: the previous label (VAP inc) likes to strike / cr claim… MtH is now signed with “Warner” – well, you got the message… makes “Alien” kinda ironic 😉
Dear Ryan, you’re on a risky journey, you know. As deeper you dig into the japanese music scene as harder it gets to crawl out again. But who should crawl out. Maximum the Hormone is just an absolute great band and live completely nuts. They are important for the japanese music scene and a big role model for many. Nao Kawakita, the drummer, was the reason Akane picked up the drums, because she never thought a girl can hit the drums so hard and wanted to do so too. The wonderful young ladies of Hanabie started as a Maximum the Hormone cover band at highschool. I would recommend to do Yoshu Fukushu or Zetsubou Billy, used for the ending scene for the famous anime series Death Note next from MTH And From Sokoninaru Go Ni Moyu or Tenohira de Oduru And mad respect that you start learning some japanese – that’s a nice way to show some respect ✊️ Oh, btw Akane plays Benjo Sandal dance of MTH https://youtu.be/KPgMD-nPITQ
Undoubtedly, I want to become a drummer who can give people a shocking impact, just like the shock I received from the drumming of Maximum The Hormone’s Nao. I want to make people who hear BAND-MAID for the first time say “I thought the drummer was a man”. I want to carry on proving the fact that music has nothing to do with gender through my drumming and BAND-MAID’s music. ——from Akane’s interview.
I had already heard the “Maximum The Hormone” name before, but it’s because Akane often mentionned them (and Nao in particular) that I really paid attention … now I have most of their records.
BAND-MAID and Maximum the hormone are my two favorite japanese bands. “Small Hands” was their first single of their 2013 album after a long break and the fans were waiting for something very heavy. But instead, they released this song as a prank. The real song is “Maximum the hormone” (like the band’s name), the one you heard right after but It isn’t the full song. You have to look at their official channel to find it. Most of their official videos have been deleted from the official channel since they signed with Warner Japan but there are still some left like one of my favorite called “Yushū Fukushū”. Please check this one out, it’s amazing. Thank you Ryan
I’ve been listening to their Spotify catalog, there’s this crazy mish-mashup in all their songs, but amazingly there’s NO repition, their ability holds no bounds, from punk, metal, funk, rockabilly, rap, disco even the wiggles, and almost every song has 3-4 different vocals, most of their songs have enough content in 1 song to make an entire album, truly amazing band
The 2nd song starts with a troll due to their fanbase saying they’d be soft once the drummer came back from her pregnancy. There’s a full version of the main song on their official youtube now tho, so you can groove away man.
If you want something with no goof, yoshu fukushu is phenomenal. If you want more insanity go with lets talk about menkata cottele. Really tho once you’re past the initial shock factor and get what they’re all about, you can’t go wrong with anything they do
Whenever I’m writing a song and it seems to be going off the rails I think to myself “But is it ‘Stop stop Winny upload’ off the rails?” And it never is. 🙂
Oh now you reached this end of Japanese bands! MTH is the ones who made all Japanese people to wear necklaces. Hope to see your reactions with their song called F.
I’m Japanese, but tbh, I have no idea what the lyrics of Maximum the Hormone say, and interestingly, they don’t sound in Japanese :p I am grateful that you have reacted to BAND-MAID, Maximum the Hormone, and Ningen Isu. Are you interested in Japanese metalcore bands? If you have an opportunity, try searching for the word “Crystal Lake” once 🙂 Thank you!
You happened to listen to two of their their most jokiest songs. MTH is definitely among my favorites, even though their early stuff isn’t really my cup of tea. The two main problems with this band is how slowly they release new music (BAND-MAID probably releases more songs in a month than MTH does in a year 😅) and how hard it is to see them live.
They’re an absolute delight to listen to and watch. Here’s my list Ryan, “Zetsubou Billy”, “Yoshu Fukushu”, “Maximum the hormone II, let’s talk about the future” and “Bo-ikikaesu” Now, sit down, strap in, and hold the flock on. You’re welcome.
Wow this has been great. Your Band-Maid marathon was a joy to watch and I am so glad you are getting out there even more because as you can see the talent just keeps coming! I would love to see more Hanabie. Reiwa Matching Generation is amazing. Or TRiDENT – Imagination.
Nearly all of the female drummers in japan that you have watched, from Akane, to Haruna were influenced by Nao, she is arguably one of the most influential drummers in Japan.
Nao is a great drummer as well.
She is probably one of the most powerful female drummers in Japan.
Maximun the Hormone drummer Nawo Kawakita is one of Akane’s biggest influences !! An interesting, fun and talented band !!

I love Band-Maid but you have to do more MTH, they also never disappoint

oh when the change happened in alien WAS PRICELESS LOL! MTH is the best they were my introduction to Japanese metal/rock. yoshu fukushu next
Whenever I’m writing a song and it seems to be going off the rails I think to myself “But is it ‘Stop stop Winny upload’ off the rails?” And it never is. 🙂
MTH are legends in Japan. They are a lot of musicians’ favorite band.
Oh now you reached this end of Japanese bands!
MTH is the ones who made all Japanese people to wear necklaces.
Hope to see your reactions with their song called F.
And THAT is why you don’t give Frank Zappa acid! These videos are insane: insanely good music, insanely epic videos and insanely fun.
One of Arkane’s influencers is the drummer from this band!
I think the closest equivalent to MTH would be Mr Bungle or Zappa. No genre is safe. You can definitely see they heavily influenced Hanabie.
Oh shit you just entered the chaotic, energetic, fun, entertaining mix genre of japanese band. 🤘🤘
Maximum the Hormone is like a box of chocolates…. one of the best damn box of chocolates you will ever find!
You happened to listen to two of their their most jokiest songs. MTH is definitely among my favorites, even though their early stuff isn’t really my cup of tea.

As a rock or metal musician there is no way you could hear MTH and not be influenced.
“I don’t know if all their shit is like this” Why, yes. yes, it is. And it’s fantastic.
They’re an absolute delight to listen to and watch. Here’s my list Ryan, “Zetsubou Billy”, “Yoshu Fukushu”, “Maximum the hormone II, let’s talk about the future” and “Bo-ikikaesu”

MtH are beyond compare.
