Yes, MTH are amazing and they will always keep you on your toes, just when you think you’ve got the song figured out they will make you go “WTF”. Another great song by them you should check out is “Let’s talk about Menkata Cottelee” as others have already recommended “Yoshu Fukushu” which is in my top 10 of all time songs
haven’t even watched the whole reaction but it’s awesome that you’re doing this Haylon… keep the MTH coming, you’ll find they’re all over the place in the best sorta way. they have a good time even at the expense of trolling their own fans… next you should do a reaction to Yoshu Fukushu
I am basically a Band Maid fan but these are always fun especially a first timer. Got to have some respect for this crazy group. They’ve been around a long while like 22 years and have some cool tracks.
This band is so hilarious but so interesting at the same time, one of the most unique japanese band out there.
Maximum the Hormone is an appropriate name for this band. They definitely are a wild trip. I would like to recommend the track “HUNGRY PRIDE” It is a killer track that is a bit more coherent and has an infectious heavy driving groove. I hope you take that track into consideration next time you visit Maximum the Hormone.
As I mentioned in your Hanabie “Sweets” rxn, Nao Kawakita (MTH Drummer) influenced many female drummers in J-Rock/Metal. Akane has an old MTH drum cover somewhere on YT land, Po!
Yeah, MTH are wierd and you never know what’s coming with them but they are bloody good what ever they put their minds to.
Got a suggestion for you to check out, something I stumbled upon recently, a Japanese and all female band😁 : Otoboke beaver – don’t light my fire.
I highly recommend other male Japanese metal bands like: S.I.M., Nocturnal Bloodlust, and Deviloof.
Hi! sorry for the long comment!
and I copy&pasted parts of it from my own comments on other channels XD
“Maximum The Hormone” is HUGE in Japan!
Don’t look that much at the Youtube numbers, as it is not as big in Japan as you might assume (they have their own platforms).
– Hanabie (your pronounciation is right btw) are very small, a new band, but on a good way.
– Band-Maid are not as big (yet!) as you might think, but they are somewhat an odd case – they have pretty big fanbase overseas – that’s not the standard for a japanese band. They used the 2020/2021 pandemic years really good actually – so they are coming out of the pandemic into their US tour reeeally healthy (“Sense” the anime single is doing great, Netflix movie cameo, part of OST of “Peacemaker”, James Gunn’s personal mention and inclusion on OST, their Spotify numbers f.e. are a BIG jump in 2021)
– “Scandal” is the most successful female band, they are still big even after 15 years
– Babymetal are (on hiatus now, but they will return 100% imo) big – for metal! – but still not as big as one would think. Japan is ruled by Pop and Idol-Pop music, so they have a healthy rock and metal scene, yes, but it’s not comparable to their pop output…
about “Maximum The Hormone”
Looks like you’ve already been told about their influence to younger musicians.
Band-Maids Akane is a huge MtH fan, yes. Big fan of the drummer specifically – Nao showed that girls can go hard too 😉
Hanabie started as a MtH cover band in high school
A lot of japanese female drummers point to Nao as their inspiration (examples are Tamu Murata from “Nemophila” and Rina from “Scandal”)
MtH are maybe the best trolls in the japanese music industry.
“Alien” – basically about a “heavy” band, making good BA music, whining about illegal downloads, and turning to crap pop music for the masses. So it’s about “selling out”. Think of “Metallica” and “Napster” 😉 Winny was the japanese equivalent of “Napster”. The talking part at the end – the vocalist shouts how much he hates “Winny”, and Nao just responds that the service is long dead by one, no one uses it, they are late to the party as always anyways, because they wrote about something that doesn’t even exist anymore 😉
Pretty much all their stuff is awesome! The band name – “Maximum the Hormone” refers to the love of the band for food, they eat a lot, sleep a lot, and generally don’t care about a healthy life style… (well, that changed… song “Maximum the Hormone II”)
The band founders are Nao (drums) and Daisuke (vocals). They have been doing MTH since 1998 or 1999. Their original bassist and guitarist left after a couple years – so Futoshi on bass and Ryo on guitar joined… Ryo is Naos little brother!!! Ryo writers most of the stuff, including lyrics, but they are often in “Ryo World” language, not even japanese understand them (and it’s also not really the point ;).
Nao has two kids now. Not only was/is she THE inspiration for so many young girl drummers, but also showed you don’t have to decide between family and your job (well, her job is her passion). Japan is very old-fashioned, many women end their career (not only for musicians; I mean overall) and become a “mom”/”house wife” when they get pregnant. Nao showed you can do both. Tamu Murata (“Nemophila”) did the same, the current “Gacharic Spin” drummer – we’ll see, but it looks like she will be coming back for sure.
Ryo actually is very chill and shy (despite his appearance). As is their bassist. The most audience interaction comes from Nao and Daisuke – these two are constantly arguing about something 😀 Daisuke is a drummer too btw – he knows ALL the drum parts, and they change places with Nao sometimes in live performances or on some songs (-> “VAP”)
Absolutely HUGE live shows! But the band also loves (and maybe even prefers) playing for smaller/medium-sized venues. That makes it more intimate, more raw. But also – you would have to be VERY lucky to get tickets at all XD
PS:
MtH labels are pretty bad with yt… like to strike / cr claim… makes “Alien” kinda ironic 😉
Ha-NA-bee-AY is close. More like hana-byeh.
Bahaha, perfect A.L.I.E.N. reaction. MtH are super sick. This is maybe their weirdest ride, but they will always surprise. Yoshu Fukushu next. So Good.
Nemophila – Revive
Hanabie – Reiwa Matching Generation
Band-Maid – Blooming
Gacharic Spin – Mindset
Winny was the Japanese Napster. Frankly, it is pretty hard to follow unless you know some Japanese language and pop culture.
I vote “yoshu fukushu” as well, my favourite.
Add a heaping dose of Frank Zappa….sing about raising dental floss on his farm….lol Let’s shift gears and back up a bit….? unlucky morpheus – Dead Leaves Rising live – https://youtu.be/qENn6tjgYrY Awesome reaction….Jaapan wouldn’t be Japan without a bit of the weird…lulwww
Drummer Nao Kawakita is the elder sister of guitarist Ryo Kawakita.
Next maximum the hormone – yoshu fukushu dude
Lol – great reaction! My advice.. “Embrace the madness”. MTH are brilliant. Expect the unexpected is your go to here.
Hungry Pride is awesome, and a little less “weird”.
Enjoy the ride!
MAXIMUUUUUUUM 🙂 “Yoshu Fukushu” next would be great. For me, the best of MtH are their live performances (so much fun) and their amazing crowds, but before you go to those you should at least be familiar with “What’s up, people?”, “F” and “Maximum the Hormone”. I’m digging so much the Japanese rock/metal scene! How did this bands remained unknown in the West this long? Even today they dont get the credit they deserve. Thanks for this reactions. The channel name is spot on 🙂 (subscribed)
“I don’t know what to expect” followed by “This is crazy” and “What is going on?!” …. a very common MTH pathway 😆 🤘. Sit back and enjoy the ride – Maximum The Fun.
There’s actually a deeper joke with the whole Stop Winny part – Winny was already defunct by the time the song came out making the whole protest pointless, which is what the conversation at the end of the video is about.
Japanese bands can be very popular at home without being big on YT for subscribers and views. Other pathways and different systems of promotion that sometimes get in the way of discovery outside Japan. Thankfully just enough videos on YT to introduce new listeners like yourself. There are other, awesome, experienced Japanese bands that have very little profile on YT, so keep an eye out. Cheers.
BTW: The end was all about protesting about the P2P sharing platform Whinny. No money for the artists.
I started laughing when I first saw the thumbnail and still haven’t stopped. When I see people are reacting to “Alien” I know it’s going to be fun. I’d say 80% of reactors miss that last surprise with the mascots being chased, so kudos for not missing it. MTH provides more WTF/second than any band that I know. For me, that’s a good thing. Your mileage may vary!
The “Winny Upload” thing is a satire of Metallica going after Napster (files sharing).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metallica_v._Napster,_Inc.
“Winny Upload” was already a thing of the past when they make this song.
Some Japanese bands. Take your pick: BAND-MAID [All their songs… really!], LOVEBITES [Break the Wall, Raise some Hell, and all the other songs], MAXIMUM THE HORMONE [Yoshu Fukushu], DEXCORE [Red Eye], CROSSFAITH [Catastrophe], SiM [Killing Me], NINGEN ISU [Heartless Scat], UNLUCKY MORPHEUS [Black Pentagram], YOUSEI TEIKOKU [Astral Dogma], COLDRAIN [Die Tomorrow], CRYSTAL LAKE [The Circle], GIVEN BY THE FLAMES [Ronove], ANGRY FROG REBIRTH [2Step Syndrome], SILENTLY SHOOTING TRAITORS [Manipulate], ALDIOUS [Dominator], BRIDEAR [Light in the Dark], CINQ ELEMENT [Destiny], MARY’S BLOOD [Marionette], GRAUPEL [Bereavement], DOLL$BOXX [Take my Chance], SOKONINARU [Tenohira De Odoru], HELLO SLEEPWALKERS [Flying Saucer], TELECiDE [Tied up Memories], NEKO [Ghost on a Record], ROTTENGRAFFTY [Hallelujah], LYNCH [Devil], DIR EN GREY [Ningen wo Kaburu], X JAPAN [Kurenai], DAZZLE VISION [Second], JUPITER [My Enemy], GALNERYUS [Angel of Salvation], BLOOD STAIN CHILD [Del-Sol], NEMOPHILA [Dissension], DADAROMA [Lucid Dream], JILUKA [Lluvia], HANABIE [We Love Sweets], POLKADOT STINGRAY [any song], MUTANT MONSTERS [Abnormal], ASTERISM [Church], and many many more…
I am loving following your Japanese journey. These guys are great.. Takes a bit of time but it’s a great ride.
You said something like your mind can’t keep up because your still trying to process what happened in the previous 30 seconds. For me it is best not trying to process anything when it comes to Maximum the Hormone. They are full on assault on your senses and they never take the route you expect them to do.
I don’t think it is possible to overstate the importance of Nao-chan for female musicians in Japan. There are so many drummers that has said things like she showed them a female drummer that could play powerful. She is also a role model in that she took a break to have a baby but then came back to the band. That was virtually unheard of before that. For women the music career ended so they could take care of the baby. Nao just brought the kid along when they were playing. Yuri (Gacharic Spin) has said that it was because of Nao that she didn’t quit when she got pregnant. Akane (Band-Maid) has said Nao is the reason why she started playing more rock and metal instead of going down the pop road. Rina (together with the rest of Scandal) is often said to be the reason why there are so many female bands. A lot of bands start out doing covers of Scandal. Rina has said more than once that Nao is the reason she kept playing when it was hard when she was learning playing in the beginning.
The brilliance of this band is they love to draw from lots of influences like System of a Down, Slipknot, Metallica, Tool with their own Japanese spin on it. Definitely no one else quite like them and I definitely suggest going down the rabbit hole on their whole catalogue. Sadly there’s not a lot on YouTube but most of their stuff is on Spotify. They probably are most recognized in America from doing one of the intros for the anime Death Note titled “What’s Up, People!”

This is MTH , an unexpected musical and visual experience on every song
Kudos for watching to the very end. MTH have only a few videos on YouTube. Watch them all.
I love Nao-san, who is the founder of MTH, as well as an awesome drummer. She plays a special role in two other videos on YouTube.
I felt the same way when I first heard MTH. I was so confused I didn’t eve know if I had enjoyed it, but after listening to them a couple more times they grew on me very quickly and became one of my favorite bands. I also love the confused look on people who listen to their songs for the first time. I recommend also checking out “zetsubou billy” it’s an amazing track that they released in the 90s as the ending track to the anime “Death Note” I recommend to wait to check it out until you’re a bit familiar with the members of the band, so the video has the intended effect when you see it. Thanks again for the reactions bro!!
8:16 “I don’ think their is a lot that could surprise me with this video or song anymore.”
that’s dangerous words with this band, they are pretty full of surprises…
