Music Teacher Reacts: マキシマム ザ ホルモン え・い・り・あ・ん

Maximum the Hormone is BACK! This time with their epic track: Alien!

I did my best to read the japanese in their title and that is the closest I could come what the title is. Based on what other reactors are saying, I seem to be correct!

This video was a blast! The song is fantastic and well written… everything about this just screams awesome! I am having so much fun reacting to this band haha.. Thank you for the suggestion!

Sending love,
-DJ

Kudos for watching to the very end. What happened to the PiP during the last part.
Winny was like a Japanese Napster. As the band stops playing, Daisuke-han decries Winny and says he absolutely cannot tolerate it (like Lars and Napster?). It sounds funny, because he speaks Osaka-ben, even though MTH are from Hachioji, Tokyo. Nao-san tells him to calm down, because nobody is using Winny anymore, and there are a lot of other things that should be stopped. He should stop yelling because everybody has left except for the one kid who is about to cry. Daisuke-han says he’s about to cry too!
I love Nao-san, who is the founder of MTH, as well as an awesome drummer. She plays a special role in two other videos on YouTube.

Finally you reacted to one of my absolutely favorite bands. Watching you short circuit watching them, was soooo cool. Great reaction DJ Please do more MTH

A bit of context. The reason the song switches styles and gets super poppy is because it was meant to make fun of bands who, as they get older, tend to switch styles to appear more radio-friendly and appeal to a larger demographic of people rather than stay loyal to who they are.

Towards the end of the song the band starts chanting “Stop Winny Upload” Winny was a music piracy site in Japan similar in vain to Napster over in the West. The whole joke is that at the very end of the song the frontman Daisuke starts shouting about how he’ll never forgive Winny for what they’ve done. Nao the drummer than responds telling him that Winny had been defunct for several years now and that he was screaming for no reason and scaring the kids away. The guitarist and songwriter Ryo would later go on to say that he wrote the “Winny” section in to have a catchy “STOP” phrase similar to “STOP nukes” or “STOP Conspiracy” but with something that was so utterly irrelevant. The video finally ends with Nao telling Daisuke not get so angry and that when he makes “That Face” he looks like his mom Mitsune (a picture of Mitsune flashes on screen which would become a running joke in their Music Video VAP) and Daisuke than responds with something along the lines of “You don’t have to bring my mother into this!”

I’m sure you’ve been told but Nao-san is the reason Akane in Band-Maid plays rock drums. She apparently listened to them when she was younger but didn’t know they had a female drummer. When she saw them live she was chocked that a female drummer could play so powerful and awesome. After that day she started trying to play more powerful and loved it. There are quite a few female Japanese drummers that also talks about Nao as a role model. I think it was Rina in Scandal (the biggest female rock band in Japan) that said Nao-san was the reason she started playing. Rina and Scandal is also often credited as the other other reason for it being so many female bands in Japan. I doubt that whole scene would be as big as it is if it wasn’t for Nao.
I absolutely love MTH! Maybe not musically all the time but their creativity is amazing. You never know where their songs will go more than it will surprise you. I’m not sure if you realised but the bassist is tapping more or less the whole song (except the slapping of course) until the Winny part.

One of the greatest from Japan. Such skilled musicians and performers and inspiration to many bands and musicians including NEMOPHILA and Akane of BAND-MAID to name a few.

Could you please react to “Sancta Maria” by the Norwegian singer and national treasure Sissel Kyrkjebø? Her voice is phenomenal.

Japanese metal scene is so much diverse and so much fun!
I love bands like “Maximum the Hormone”, “BabyMetal” and “Nemophila” since every new song I don’t know what to expect, they can always surprise me! And there is also so much talent involved!!

Next one should be Yoshu Fukushu 😀

Great reaction, at least until you forgot to turn the video back on.😁 I’ll have to go watch their video anyways. It was so much fun. As random as Japanese commercials.

The “Winny Upload” thing is a joke about Metallica going after Napster (files sharing)… more on Wikipedia.
_Winny Upload (Japanese Napster) was already a thing of the past when Maximum the Hormone created this song._

Could you possibly tell us what the song was about? Since you speak Japanese and can appreciate this on another level. You know this is most definitely not my type of music but I like learning from you. The different techniques used is interesting.

You need to see MTH performing this song live… madness, a real old punk spirit. In fact an old time ago (like 2000) before all this weird brillant mix they were a pretty good punk band with sparks of future MTH. There are a couple of really old and very low budget videos who are very good. By the way when Nao sing in the lives it’s replaced in the drums by Daisuke (the screaming and jumping maniac).

Think Power Rangers. This band is a megazord robot made up from Tool, Mastodon, System of a Down and Anime Intros. The fact that they don’t take themselves serious makes it work. They’re just such a good time.

Maximum is my favorite band of all time, you should definitely check out more of their music, their early stuff is heavy but more pop/funk metal influence and each album just gets better and better.

Just Another Reactor

I just came across your channel when this reaction popped up on my feed. From one reactor to another, you really need to react to more MTH. I would recommend Youshu Fukushu (not sure if I’m spelling that right), Koi No Sperma, Let’s Talk About Menkata Cottelee and What’s Up People. I’d never heard of MTH before I started my channel and now they’re one of my favorite bands.
