Maximum the Hormone is the definition of controlled chaos. Absolutely love their willingness to just throw conventional song writing out the window. I highly recommend reacting to their catalog. Every song is different, and you never know what you are going to get.
While I can’t say for sure, what I do know is that a lot of their music is about speaking out against wrongs in society. Yoshu Fukushu is about the guitarists struggles in school brought about by a learning disorder in conjunction with ther unforgiving education system, which ultimately led to him dropping out in middle school. [F] allegorically compares the oppression of Tibet by China to Frieza’s Tyrannical reign in DragonballZ. I know they have a lot like that, but I can’t off the top of myu head think of any others.
At the same time, the lead song-writer uses sexually explicit lyrics and imagery frequently. Just take their song Koi no Sperm, which is about… ahem. I can see where either side can come from, but based on what I know, I’m pretty sure in this case, they are ridiculing people who do a lot of the things mentioned in the song: stalking, sexual assault, etc.
A final note: Ryo, the writer of most of their music, bot sick of his music being misinterpreted, and around this time started putting in several paragraphs of notes alongside the lyrics in the leaflet. I can’t read it myself, but I’ll post it in the Discord’s music channel if anyone wants to give it a shot.
M.T.H. are the truest sense of a band as all 4 members all bring their own personality to each song. They play to each other’s strengths. They have no problem fusing multiple genres into their music, often in the same song. They are like the perfect dessert sweet, salty, creamy, crunchy.
Never heard of this band but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Like a weird mix of funk metal with poppy hardcore punk. Probably the closest comparison is System of a Down, but their brand of off-the-wall postmodern weirdness still sounds quite different than SOAD to my ears. Definitely another band to add to my never-ending list of artists to check out.
As for the cultural nuances, I do know that Japanese is kinda infamous for pornography that really fetishizes schoolgirls, much more than is typical in the USA (where it’s also obviously a thing). Whether that has any roots in “normal” Japanese society I don’t know, but I can think of several Japanese films that have been about the subject including Hideaki Anno’s Love & Pop and Sion Sono’s Love Exposure. I’d recommend both, but especially Love Exposure which is one of the weirdest films I’ve ever seen (in a good way!).
I think you got the gist of the lyrics but since no one else has posted it yet, I’m going to drop my interpretation of the lyrics. This is Maximum the Hormone / Ryo-kun essentially attacking molesters, pedophiles and the like, but framing the song from the perspective of the “middle age” creep stalking girls. I also see it as an attack on the fetishisation you see for Japanese culture (maybe that’s where the foreigners thing comes in) as well as the way you hear of young girls getting caught up in the super weird side of that more often than you’d want. Jamming all that kink up against an incredibly poppy chorus is a very intriguing choice lol but it does come across are oddly thematic imo. Idk
Haven’t listened to these guys in years thanks for reminding me!
They are on tour right now. Tomorrow they play in cologne. Is it coincidence you release this today? I think not 😉
Ah I’m so glad they got through the poll. Another one of my favourite bands! Been on a good run recently 🙂
I never expected to see Maximum the Hormone on this channel unless I were to request it!
Omg if you want a song where the tone of the lyrics don’t match the tone of the melody you gotta check out say it by yorushika
Could you check out Nemophila Dissension or Revive next?
