Brodown Japanese Metal Week 2 – BRODOWN REACTS | MAXIMUM THE HORMONE
Maximum the Hormone are the masters of the musical mash-up. They are primarily metal but how much you get depends on the song. They also have a sense of humor that I have always enjoyed. You have now listened to 3 of my top 5. There is still Unlucky Morpheus and X Japan to go.
The “dreads” dude (who is also the brother of the drummer girl) was overweight and was told by doctors he had to lose weight or face serious health issues. They took some time off and he got healthy. When they did their comeback the fans were shocked he was so thin and some complained they liked him better when he was overweight. This song was released as a response to those fans. They are very influential to a lot of Japanese bands and musicians. A few other songs to check out are Yoshu Fukushu, What’s up people, Hungry Pride, or Zetsubou Billy.
MTH is the name of the BAND. MAXIMUM THE RYO-KUN is the guitarist and also the brother of NAO-CHAN, the drummer and founder of the band.
Other commenters have suggested many good contemporary metal bands with male musicians. To those I would add these slightly older bands: ONMYOUZA, D’ESPAIRS RAY, GIRUGAMESH. Also, check out a current female fronted Melodic Death Metal called UNLUCKY MORPHEOUS – start with BLACK PENTAGRAM.
But you need also to go back to the beginning of Japanese Metal: X-JAPAN (look for concert footage from the 80’s, when they were young, hungry, and had BIG HAIR!), LOUDNESS, maybe EZO. And of course, the pioneering ladies of Japanese Metal, SHOW-YA. They are still making music today, but check out their original videos and concert footage from the 80’s of I AM THE STORM (WATASHI WA ARASHI) and GENKAI LOVERS.
BAND-MAID has a harder, Metal-adjacent side, too. Watch two videos: DOMINATION (live), and MANERS + BLACK HOLE (live with no audience).
Check out any Ningen Isu song, i’d recommend ‘Heartless Scat’ it has great riffs and transitions.
Another band is Unlucky Morpheus – ‘Cadaver/Redavac’ is a power metal song masterpiece.
Dir En Grey, Dexcore, Nocturnal Bloodlust, and Deviloof are all different from each other and from the other bands you reacted to. Another one to check out is hanabie (花冷え。) with their song We Love Sweets (我甘党)
Japan is the world’s largest market for music on physical media and the second-largest overall music market after the US… but with only 1/3 of the population.

Just to clarify, the “Hormone” in their name is NOT the English word Hormone (like what is raging through teenagers). It is Horumon (ホルモン) which is the word for a type of barbecued tripe (pork or beef intestines), a very popular and traditional Japanese food.

LOL I knew you guys were the Real Deal after this one. 1. you instantly got the SOAD likeness… MTH was formed by the Drummer Nao and her younger brother (dreadlocks) Ryo in 1998! 2. You tried to stonewall it, but I saw the smile on your face and could tell you ‘got it”. MTH are totally Unique – but as you can tell, that is not a bad thing. BTW – all female Japanese Metal bands have been a ‘thing’ for a long time, and there has been an annual All Female Metal Band Festival in Tokyo since 1987 (hosted by Show Ya, mentioned by Greg above). MTH is very experimental & eclectic.. Some of their other songs are heavier. Tamu the drummer from Nemophila was inspired to take up drumming because of the drummer Nao. Akane from Band-Maid is also a Nao.fan.
Suprisingly they all sing, and the part at 7:23 is the drummer 🙂
Hope you two don’t just move on from top 4 bands and stay on the Japanese world of metal/rock requests and do plenty of exploring. Its a pretty exciting place to be and that’s what is needed in todays world of BLAND music. Maximum the Hormone aren’t classic metal but boy are they interesting. People have suggested Hanabie. (Hanabee-ayh) used to do a lot of MTH covers so you will see their influences if you check out We love sweets.

LOL. MTH is a genre of their own. They do what they want. They’ve got some great tunes that leave you confused but pumped. Try “Alien,” or “Yoshu Fukushu.”
