Like Killermonjero said – Winnie was a Japanese Napster clone. It was very controversial, especially in the Indie community. At the end, the drummer *Nao* (dr/vocals/growls) is telling *Daisuke* (growls) that nobody has used Winnie in years, so there’s no reason to ‘Stop’ it – and goes on to tell him he’s acting like his mother (the picture they showed at the end). Nao is the founder of MTH, and when the original guitarist quit the band she recruited her younger brother *Ryo* to play guitar and sing. Nao is seen as an inspiration for young Japanese female drummers, because she was an early band leader, a great drummer, and proved that you can have a career as a female musician and still have children and a family. MTH is one of my very favorite bands.
A bit of backgroud for the song:
The Japanese music industry works a lot differently than western ones. Maximum the Hormone was and still is about face-melting shredding metal, switching genres and tempos, unapologetic themes and vocals and basically just wild craziness. But there is a sort of method to their madness. Basically each of their songs has a story, so it pays to know the background lore of the band to really appreciate their works.
ALIEN is about being an alien to this music industry. A lot of bands start out with a raw, unapologetic sound (much like MTH), you can see that in the first part of the video with them doing a live show with shoddy equipment in a warehouse, singing about injustice, corruption, problems in society, etc., that are kinda taboo in Japan. Then in the next part they get picked up by publisher/label in a produced music video. Labels usually “tame” such bands, blunt their edge to give them a broader public appeal, so they can sell them to more people. And in the end, they are pretty much doing bland elevator music on a kids’ stage, a mere shadow of their former selves, singing about stopping Winny. By the way, Winny was a file-sharing service in Japan in the early 2000’s, much like Napster, where people would share music and such, but it’s been mostly defunct for a long time. Many publishers and labels had their signed bands speak out against Winny and filesharing publicly, which had about the same result as when Metallica sued Napster: public backlash and ridicule. At the end of the video Daisuke (screamo/vocals) yells at the kids to stop using Winny, then Nao (drummer) is argues with him that Winny doesn’t even exist anymore so there is nothing to “stop”, and they could be speaking out against many other things instead. She also pokes at Daisuke that he looks like his mom when he is angry (hence the picture).
MTH are fun and presence as far as the eye can see. The whole thing combined with their talent on the instruments and for songwriting? That’s why they are a great inspiration for many of the current Japanese bands. 🔥🤘🏻

You’re reaction when they “slowed it down” was hilarious. It was like my first reaction to Alien. lol.
The Legendary band Maximum the Hormone 🤘
The fun one with MTH is everyone says about SoaD influence, yet the 2 bands started up within a year of each other, so pretty much grew with similar sounds from both the east and west
Sokoninaru have a Cover version of Alien…..it’s fantastic…my favorite band cover my second favorite band😁
But MtH is everytime great.
Love that track, I also would like to recommend my personal favorite MTH track “Hungry Pride”
They are so different, in an awesome way.
Love MTH. I know you really like Nemophila as well. They did 2 excellent covers of MTH songs in Shimi and Zetsbou Billy. Beware though MTH can be monsters on reactors. It is sad as their music is great. For fucks sake you cannot even get many of their older videos on YouTube at all.
HAnabie started out as a MTH cover band and so many Japanese artists cite MTH as influences.
Winny is like a Japanese Napster.
Maximum the Hormone is great. 🤣😝🤘💥
I liked the part where Nao marries the Gaijin Music Producer and then the Band goes all anit-Winnie and kid show Pop!!….they are so beyond expressing their (pick your pejorative)….LoL!!
Loved it the first time…will Love it the Last!!
You’re ready for Ningen Isu. Check out their song Heartless Scat for some Sabbath vibes.
