This is such an underrated MTH song to me – I always liked it but then when I found out what the lyrics were about it just took it to a whole emotional height for me. The song’s about depression – the title’s a pun on the word for ‘depression’ (uutsu) and ‘beautiful’ (utsukushii), and it basically a call of encouragement to those struggling with their mental health. It sounds really upbeat but the lyrics are absolutely crushing & it’s such a good contrast. I’ll post them below!

At the point when this song came out, I was so used to listening to MTH, I was able to pick up the lyrics for this song on the first listen. The part saying ”0.5生懸命にて勝て (rei-ten-go sho kenmei niteh kateh)” gave me instant goosebumps when I first heard it. In Japan, it’s usual that people say “do your best (do your 100%)” for anything, but for mentally ill people they feel so much pressure from those words. Ryo made up this word which means “do your half best (do your 50%) but we can still win” which basically means “take it easy”. This song definitely saved me from my days when work wasn’t going so well. Thanks for reacting to this song.

Utsukushiki ( 鬱くしき) is a play on the Japanese words 美しい (Utsukushi) meaning “Beautiful” and “鬱” (Utsu) meaning “Depressed”. Hence 鬱くしき using the Kanji for depressed in place of the usual kanji for Utsukushii ( 美しい ). Hence, the “Ode to the Bluetiful people” translation. One of my favourites by them and one that goes often overlooked.

Love from Japan!
Man you guys always put smile on my face whenever I see how hyped you are in reaction videos. Especially MTH ones lol
Btw this song is basically a cheering song for depressed people, describing how they feels, what their life is like, and how hard they’re fighting against it.
Its lyrics are actually touching and relatively easy to understand for their songs lol
The massage is pretty straight up.

Just finished bingeing all your reactions a couple days ago and was pleased to see a new one already! Seeing how much you guys absolutely gush over them reminds me of the first time discovering them. Subscribed for sure so I can keep seeing these reactions as you exhaust their catalogue.

Good news for you is there are still so many great songs left to experience.

These are musts still (in no particular order, they are all amazing in their own right – many of these haven’t seen a video for)
– Benjo Sandal Dance
– Chu2 the beam
– Cerfiro Radio Comeback
– Mesubuta no Ketsu ni Binta (Kick mo)
– Rock Bankurawase
– Nigireeee!!

At 2:40 I was like, “Wait, this riff sounds familiar?”.. then shortly after, “Oh it sounded exactly like the breakdown in Babymetal’s song 4 no Uta!”
I think that’s the closest I can get from a Babymetal x MTH crossover. 🙂 I suggest listening to that song too. 😉

Yes! I really love that song, one of my favorites of the ‘Yoshu Fokushu’ Album. When they play this song live, Ryo plays and sings a little intro which is also the track before this song on the album and it’s a cover of a song from the 80’s Japanese Punk Band “The Blue Hearts” called 月の爆撃機 (the bomber in the moon). When you like to listen to some old school punk rock, check out the Blue Hearts, their most known song is “Linda Linda”.

We’re gonna need Maximum the Hormone to make some new music soon so we can keep these videos going indefinitely 😆 Well also cause we just need more MtH. Always.

What I love about MTH is they always bring there own unique groove to everything they do. That’s something that is very rare these days.

Great choice, this song always gets me going. I think you might enjoy their song “Nigirrrrrrrre!!” From their 2015 album called “Mimikajiru Shin’uchi” it’s sort of a remake of an older song with much better quality and a lot of new heavy parts.
